  • Message Centres Organizes Our Family

You know how difficult it is to keep track of what everyone in a family is doing at any given time? It was driving me crazy not knowing where someone had gone or when they’d be back, and we could never find the scrap of paper that someone had written their “note” on. Also there was always the issue of messages that someone in the family didn’t get for some reason or another.

  • Piggy Bank From Milk Jug

My Grampa told me that pretty soon they will stop making pennies. Maybe by the time I grow up, there won’t be any more pennies at all! I decided that I want to start saving pennies before they are all gone.

Grampa knows how to make a piggy bank from a milk jug. He helped me make one to save pennies in.

  • Simple Fixes

Once of the charms about the TV show MacGyver was that he could take almost any problem and manufacture a fix from whatever happened to be handy. The thing is, quite often you CAN fix things with a something else you have on hand. Sometimes it takes a little modifying, but often you can effect a temporary-to-permanent fix that works just as well as the original.

  • Recycle Your Cycle

I just came across a really interesting idea that they are doing in Sudbury, Ontario that we should have everywhere!  I have recently outgrown my bike and I know Dad’s got lots of other priorities so I haven’t been bugging him about buying me a new one.  We have actually been doing this in our family forever with everything from toys to clothes but its really exciting to see how it can work on a larger scale with a whole city!

  • Repurpose a Dead Dishwasher

Our first dishwasher an old portable with a cutting board top that you would wheel to the sink and hook up the hoses when you wanted to do the dishes. It had been free-cycled to us and we used it for a number of years. When it finally died, I scavenged some of the racks for my Sweetheart to use in the kitchen. One was a narrow rack that slipped nicely into her pot cupboard and holds all her pot lids. The other was the cutlery basket. This particular cutlery basket had 6 compartments, 2 side by side in 3 rows. It also had a handle that you could pull out of the dishwasher and take directly to the table if you wanted. I immediately recognized what a great kitchen utensil basket it would make and it has sat on the counter by the stove ever since. We couldn’t think of what we could do with the larger racks at the time and the carcass so sadly, it went to the landfill. That always bugs me.

  • Evergreen Wedding

My cousin Kimberley is getting married next month, and she’s asked me to be her junior bridesmaid! It’s the first time I’ve been invited to be part of a wedding party, but Kimmy knows that her wedding theme would be something that I would appreciate.

  • Give Clothes New Life By Dyeing

My best girlfriend Teresa has being bugging me to write something about dying clothes so I’m finally sitting down to do it after the weekend now that I know what it is all about.  She and I spent the weekend adding colour to our wardrobes and I was really impressed by how easy it is to do and how great it looks to have fresh dyed clothes in the exact colour you want.

  • Paper Holder From Tissue Box

I’ve been trying to think of something to make for Mother’s Day. I had a really good idea! Mom likes the scrap paper Dad brings home from work. It’s paper that has been used on one side. The other side is good. Dad cuts it into 4 pieces. The pieces are just the right size for when you need a piece of paper. But the pieces sometimes don’t stay in an nice stack and they get messy. Mom doesn’t like that.
