  • Brownies In A Jar

Like everybody, I have some favourite recipes I bake up every year for Christmas.  I’ve always loved giving gifts of food but it’s not always practical to give ready-made things unless you know that it will be eaten right away, especially at this time of year when everyone is baking and giving baking away.  One of my solutions is to make up “Brownies in a Jar” as a long-lasting substitute for a lovely homemade baked gift. It works as a perfect hostess gift because it looks beautiful, but also is very practical and easy to whip up any time. It’s especially great for those that love homemade baking but don’t normally keep ingredients on hand to do it themselves.

  • EDIBLE ZOMBIE HEAD

My granddaughter wants to bring something special to their halloween party at school this year, so she came to me and asked if we could find something to make that could be made into a Halloween theme. We went through some of my recipes and decided to "adapt" an old crowd pleasing favourite, a cheese crab ball. It's really easy to make and works as a perfect party food for a lot of people. My granddaughter was thrilled when we manuactured the crab cheese ball into into a pretty convincing zombie head, and I'm pretty sure it will be a hit with the other kids too!

  • Help Thrift Stores Recycle

I’ve been volunteering at the “New To You” second hand store in town for years now and thought I should take the time to explain what a worthwhile and important function these second hand stores play in our communities.  The one I volunteer at actually donates all of their proceeds to a local mental health charity that helps people in need.Of course there are the obvious benefits of providing access to slightly used but very useful unwanted items to people and families who might not otherwise be able to afford them.
  • Banana Nut Bread

It happened to me again. Bananas were on sale and I bought more than we could eat before they got too ripe. Actually, I don’t even like to eat bananas once they start getting brown spots, so it’s inevitable that once that happens, unless Mac eats them, they’re going to go black.

  • Recycle Your Old Eye Glasses

Yesterday, I was cleaning out a junk drawer and found a bunch of old glasses cases with outdated prescription glasses. We never have thrown out our glasses when we get a new pair because we always think that it’s good to keep the old ones for a spare in case we lose or break our new pair. Now, we seem to have quite a collection going. We’ve always taken really good care of our glasses, so they all are in excellent shape. A couple of pairs even had their own set of clip on sunglasses. I decided it was time to see about how to go about recycling them to someone else who could use them.

  • Valentine's Day No-Bake Cheesecake

My oldest granddaughter asked me if I had a nice recipe that she could surprise the family with as a Valentine's Day dessert. I had to think about it for a few minutes, but then I remembered I have this quick and easy no-bake cheesecake recipe. Dressed up with fresh strawberries cut in half to look like hearts, I'm pretty sure everyone would agree that this would make a lovely ending to any Valentine's dinner!

  • Repurposed Ping Pong Table / Dining Table

40 years ago when my sister was the only person lucky enough to have a basement with a ping pong table, we held all our Christmas family gatherings at her house. Not only did that keep the kids busy downstairs while the adults were visiting upstairs, but come mealtime, she had a table big enough to put everyone around. We could squeeze 20 of us around that ping pong table sitting on folding card table chairs and benches made from wooden crates with planks strung between them.

  • Soft Spiced Ginger Cookies

For some reason, most people seem to think of ginger cookies particularly at  Christmas time, but I like them all year round. Of all the different kinds of cookies there are, my personal weakness is for ginger cookies. I’ve never been one much for sweets myself, even though Mac and the kids all have a sweet tooth. I guess that’s why the ginger cookies have always appealed to me.
